Ulysse Comtois was a painter and sculptor for over forty years exhibiting with Automatistes, an artistic movement that changed the world of Canadian art. He was one of the first sculptors to experiment with welded metal in Canada. In Montreal he was introduced to the meticulous geometric abstractions of the Plasticiens.
