Ottawa Antique and Vintage Market Spring 2018 Preview
1. Daybed (similar to Mies Van Der Rohe Barcelona)
Here is the first item for preview for the Ottawa Antique and Vintage Market which is April 7 and 8th at the Carleton Fieldhouse. It is a vintage daybed which closely resembles the famous Mies Van Der Rohe Barcelona daybed. The material is a durable vinyl with a soft leathery feel. The frame is a very nice black powder coated steel with chrome legs. This is a highly versatile piece, perfect to use as secondary seating in great rooms or as a large coffee table. The pillow is detachable. There are a few spots that show wear but otherwise it is in fair vintage condition. 72"w x 32.5"d x 17"h. 2. Grete Jalk Model 118/3 Sofa made by France and Sons
Preview number 2 is a special one for the design enthusiasts out there. A rare find, this all original, teak 3-seat sofa was designed by Grete Jalk and manufactured by France and Sons in the 1960s. France and Sons produced some of the most sought after designed mid-century modern pieces and had a large roster of the most coveted designers from that era. If you like design and are a mid-century modern enthusiast, this is definitely the piece for you. The cushions are all original and in excellent condition considering their age. France and sons were known for producing cushions with springs in them for added comfort. It was part of their legacy as a mattress company in their early days. It is rare to find a sofa with these cushions still in tact. There is some sun fading to the upholstery, but the original 100% wool fabric is in excellent condition with no tears or runs. The sofas clean lines, curved back and curved arms are examples of the designer's expertise in simplicity and curvature. Grete Jalk was a rare female in a male dominated industry. She took inspiration from design greats Alvar Aalto and Charles and Ray Eames. Her furniture designs were produced by a number of celebrated Danish manufacturers including Poul Jeppesen, Fritz Hansen, Glostrup, and France & Søn. 75"w x 28"d x 30"h.
